Dendera is the Arabic name for the ancient Egyptian city of Iunet Dendera. In antiquity, it was the cult center of the goddess Hathor, the deity of love, music, and festivities. The ancient Greeks equated Hathor with their goddess Aphrodite. The temple is considered one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt and is a masterpiece of architecture, a unique example of art, and a comprehensive record of Egyptian religion.
The Dendera temple was built to honor the Hathor triad on the west bank of the Nile. Its construction dates back to the Greco-Roman period when King Ptolemy III erected it from sandstone. Many Roman emperors later added expansions, so the construction process spanned approximately 200 years. The Dendera temple is one of the few temples where two triads are venerated: the Hathor triad and the Osiris triad.
The temple is renowned for its astronomical scenes on the ceiling, depicting kings and emperors making offerings. It is also distinguished by its crypts with beautiful reliefs, which are also visible. The temple features a staircase leading to the roof.
Abydos is located approximately 153 km north of Luxor. The most significant structure in Abydos is the Temple of Seti I, which was completed by his son Ramses II. The temple features many shrines dedicated to various Egyptian deities, including Amun, Osiris, and Ptah. It is also renowned for its famous king list. Behind the temple is the so-called Osireion, or the symbolic tomb of Osiris.
