Luxor is a city in southern Egypt that is often referred to as the “largest open-air museum in the world” due to its abundance of ancient Egyptian monuments and archaeological sites. Luxor was the ancient city of Thebes, the capital of Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom period (1550–1070 BC). It served as a center of worship for the god Amun and many impressive temples were built in the area.
